The Anthem of the Azerbaijan SSR
The composer of the Anthem of the Azerbaijan SSR adopted in 1945 was Uzeyir Hajibeyov. The lyrics were written by Samed Vurghun and Suleyman Rustam. The musical notation of the “State Anthem of the Azerbaijan SSR” was published on the first page of the September 23, 1945 issue of the “Kommunist” newspaper. During the adoption of the new Constitution of the Azerbaijan SSR in 1978, Huseyn Arif made certain modifications to the anthem’s text, while Niyazi conducted the musical editing. According to Article 182 of the 1978 Constitution, the approval of the State Anthem of the Azerbaijan Soviet Socialist Republic was to be determined by the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Azerbaijan SSR. This anthem was effectively no longer performed after October 1991 when Azerbaijan regained its independence.
The melodies of Azerbaijani marches are simple and memorable while being emotionally stirring and combative in content. Uzeyir Hajibeyli, who always desired to see the Azerbaijani people prosperous, free, and happy, through the anthems he composed, called his people to freedom and independence. Every Azerbaijani feels a sense of pride when hearing our national music and artistic masterpieces. Our National Anthem embodies our national unity, carries the spirits of martyrs, and represents a sacred concept affirming the existence, grandeur, and power of our state.

Azerbaijan - this glorious, honorable land the world admires,
The love for homeland, our ancestors’ precious legacy.
On bloody battlefields, we forged our bright days -
From generation to generation, our nation’s fame endures.
Long live Azerbaijan, Land of Fire - our Motherland!
From our might, the sun rises over the ancient East...
Our flag embodies socialism’s fraternity of nations,
Prosper, o Homeland! You are our people’s honor and pride.
Our teacher is great Lenin - our glorious victory banner,
Our guide is Stalin - the lodestar of our lives.
Beautiful Baku! Azerbaijan draws strength from your power -
Our native Soviet land of free nations and free days.
Long live Azerbaijan, Land of Fire - our Motherland!
From our might, the sun rises over the ancient East...
Our soil is a hearth of happiness for all mankind,
Prosper, o Homeland! You are our people’s honor and pride.
Our brother is the Russian people, standard-bearers of freedom,
We’ve nourished this friendship and affection with our blood.
Our glorious Soviet land is the world’s pride -
Here blossomed humankind’s first spring...
Long live Azerbaijan, Land of Fire - our Motherland!
From our might, the sun rises over the ancient East...
Acclaim to our world of free labor and free conscience!
Prosper, o Homeland! You are our people’s honor and pride.
