By Decree No. 3053 of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev dated September 18, 2008, titled “On Naming the Baku Music Academy after Uzeyir Hajibeyli”, the Baku Music Academy was named after the great Azerbaijani composer Uzeyir Hajibeyli.

The Azerbaijan State Symphony Orchestra named after Uzeyir Hajibeyli is one of the first orchestras established in the former USSR. The State Symphony Orchestra was founded in 1920 on the initiative of Uzeyir Hajibeyli. Since 1944, the orchestra has borne the name of Uzeyir Hajibeyli.

In 1981, a feature film titled “Uzeyir’s Life” or “Chords of a Long Life” depicting the life of Uzeyir Hajibeyli, was directed by the renowned Azerbaijani writer and playwright Anar. The role of Hajibeyli was played by Huseynagha Atakishiyev. The film included fragments from both artistic and documentary films preserved in the USSR State Film Fund and the Central State Archive of Cinema and Photo Documents of the Azerbaijan SSR. The soundtrack features works by Uzeyir Hajibeyli, Azerbaijani folk music, as well as pieces by Azerbaijani, Russian, and Western European composers.

Since 2014, the vessel Uzeyir Hajibeyli has been operated under the Azerbaijani tricolor flag in non-Caspian (international) waters. The dry cargo vessel, which sails in international waters and belongs to the Maritime Transport Fleet of the “Azerbaijan Caspian Shipping” Closed Joint-Stock Company (ASCO), is named after Uzeyir Hajibeyli. The ship is 108.33 meters in length, 16.74 meters in width, and has a cargo capacity of 5,200 tons.

In 2005, on the occasion of the 120th anniversary of Uzeyir Hajibeyli’s birth, the first mugham competition was held upon the initiative and under the leadership of the First Vice-President of the Republic of Azerbaijan and President of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation Mehriban Aliyeva.

In 2008, on the initiative of the President of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, Mehriban Aliyeva, the project “The World of Uzeyir” was published, prepared by the Foundation and dedicated to the life and work of the great composer. 

This edition includes the books “Chronicle of Life”, “Encyclopedia of Uzeyir Hajibeyli”, “Artistic and Journalistic Works”, as well as the operas “Leyli and Majnun” and “Koroghlu”, and the piano scores, librettos, and CDs of the musical comedies “If Not That One, Then This One” and “Arshin Mal Alan”.

The book “The Chronicle of Life” has been prepared  based on a book by Gulam Mammadli talking of the life and creative work of  Uzeir Hajybeyli. In the book, the interesting life and multilateral creativity of Uzeir bey have been described with concrete facts, works by Uzeir Hajybeyli with facts and documents taken from various newspapers, magazines and archive materials for the 60-year period and opinions about these works are presented. Here have also been gathered works by composer of genius and various materials written about him, and the whole bibliography of works published so far with regard to Uzeirism.

First Lady of Azerbaijan, President of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation Mehriban Aliyeva wrote  the foreword to the book.

In the book “Bélles-léttres and journalistic works”, operas, music comedies, satirical stories, small scenes, topical satires and articles by Uzeir Hajybeyli have been collected.

In 2008, within the framework of the culture series, the Central Bank issued a gold commemorative coin dedicated to the memory of the great composer and musicologist Uzeyir Hajibeyli. The commemorative coin was produced by the Austrian company “Austrian Mint”. The obverse side of the coin features a portrait of the great composer, while the reverse side depicts Azerbaijani miniatures. Surrounding the portrait are the year of issue “2008”, the words “Republic of Azerbaijan”, the composer’s name, and the coin’s denomination. The commemorative coin is a legal tender within the territory of the Republic of Azerbaijan at its nominal value.

International Music Festival
International Music Festival

The Uzeyir Hajibeyli International Music Festival has been held in Azerbaijan since 2009, based on the relevant decree of President Ilham Aliyev. Throughout its history, the festival has featured outdoor and indoor concerts, performances, exhibitions, academic conferences, master classes, and various other events across cities in Azerbaijan. Prominent musicians, artistic ensembles, soloists, and conductors from different countries have participated in the festival concerts.

In 2019, the Azerbaijan Composers’ Union established the honorary medal named after Uzeyir Hajibeyli.

On January 18, 2019, Mehriban Aliyeva - the First Vice-President of the Republic of Azerbaijan and President of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, was awarded the first copy of the “Uzeyir Hajibeyli” honorary medal for her invaluable contributions to the preservation and transmission of the rich heritage of the great composer, founder of modern Azerbaijani musical art, prominent musicologist, publicist, playwright, pedagogue, and public figure Uzeyir Hajibeyli, who rendered exceptional services to the development of Azerbaijani culture.

One of the central streets in Baku bears the name of Uzeyir Hajibeyli.

By the decision No. 82 dated March 4, 1949, of the Executive Committee of the Baku City Council of Workers’ Deputies of the Azerbaijan SSR, the name of Azadlıq (Freedom) Street was changed to Uzeyir Hajibeyli Street.

The birthday of the great Azerbaijani composer Uzeyir Hajibeyli, September 18, is traditionally celebrated in Azerbaijan as “Uzeyir Music Day”. On the occasion of the 110th anniversary of the composer’s birth, by the decree No. 385 dated September 18, 1995, signed by the national leader Heydar Aliyev, it was decided to mark this day as “Uzeyir Music Day”. Each year, concerts, international music festivals, competitions, various events, and exhibitions are organized in different regions of Azerbaijan to commemorate this day.
