Uzeyir Hajibeyli

“Firuza”

“Firuza” is an unfinished opera by Uzeyir Hajibeyli. The composer began working on it in 1945. The libretto, written by Uzeyir Hajibeyli himself, is based on folk legends, and originally the opera was titled “Shehrebanu”. Among the musical fragments that have come down to us, special attention is drawn to the aria of Firuza. Its music stands out for its tender and poetic qualities. Due to its expressiveness and melodiousness, this aria is considered one of the most beautiful arias created by the composer.

The libretto of the opera was published in the first volume of Uzeyir Hajibeyli’s “Selected Works” in 1964. The aria of Firuza was published in Moscow (translated by Y. Fidler in 1949; translated by P. Panchenko in 1956) and in Baku as part of the collection “Selected Arias, Romances, and Songs” by Uzeyir Hajibeyli, compiled and edited by A. Abbasov in 1975.

The aria “Firuza” was performed and promoted both in Azerbaijan and beyond by famous opera singers, including Fidan Gasimova, and was very well received by the public with great admiration.
